Universal Design for Learning
I really enjoyed learning more about Universal Design for Learning. I really think this will empower students to oversee their own learning. I will take time to do more research so that I can also share UDL with my staff.
Which of these guidelines am I already using?
Under Guideline 1 Perception, I only use Checkpoint 1.1. Under Guideline 2 Language and Symbols, I use all but Checkpoint 2.3. Under Guideline 3 Comprehension, I use all the Checkpoints. Under Guideline 4 Physical Action, I do not use any of the Checkpoints. Under Guideline 5 Expression and Communication, I use Checkpoints 5.1 and 5.2. Under Guideline 6 Executive Functions, I use all Checkpoints except for 6.2. Under Guideline 7 Recruiting Interest, I use all the Checkpoints. Under Guideline 8 Sustaining Effort and Persistence, I use Checkpoints 8.2 and 8.3. Under Guideline 9 Self-Regulation, I only use Checkpoint 9.2. I am proud of myself that I did best in the Comprehension, Expression, and Recruiting Interest guidelines.
Which of these could I add right now to my teaching practice?
The easiest ones to implement right now would be Guideline 1 Checkpoints 1.2 and 1.3. I can add alternatives for auditory and visual information. We have a very limited budget in the library, but I can look for free assistance in these areas.
Which of these looks great, but I need some help to implement?
I would like to implement Checkpoint 4, Guidelines 4.1 and 4.2. These are to provide options for physical action. We do not have tools and assistive technology available, but I would talk to our technology leader and administrators about helping me secure these. I will also use the website https://aem.cast.org/get-started/aem-takeaways for accessible educational materials for vision impairment and/or print disabilities.
I would like to investigate the resources page from the Novack Education https://www.novakeducation.com/resources. It has a lot of free resources to download. You do have to create an account to access them. It’s broken up into sections; Planning Tools, Assessment Tools, Infographics and Posters, Books, and Translated Files. I especially want to look at the Planning Tools to get me started with where I can implement into my lesson plans.
Another resource I would like to research more is https://udlguidelines.cast.org/. I love how the UDL Guidelines are laid out with clickable links that give the definition, examples, and research to back it up. I also like how the site is very user friendly with so much information to pour over.

Novak Education is a website I also found when exploring different resources that talked about UDL! One thing I found on their website was a Venn diagram that illustrated the differences and similarities between UDL and differentiated instruction that I found super helpful!
